Congratulations! You have taken the first (and I think) hardest step! It is NOT EASY to admit you need help and even more difficult to ask for it. How well I know! Yet, here you are - and I thank you for being curious and for your interest in working with me. I am a warm, caring, compassionate psychiatric clinical nurse specialist and advanced practice nurse who has worked in the mental health field for more than 38 years. I am a graduate of two of the top nursing schools in the US, and a member of two honor societies. I'm board certified as a Psych CNS by the national American Nurses Credentialing Center. I have taught psychiatric nursing at the university level. About me as a person? Maybe you'd like to know that I have life experience as a daughter, mother, aunt, mental health consumer, colleague, wife, ex, friend, and sister...and not necessarily all at the same time or with the same person. ;-) I have expertise in women's mental health issues; particularly those related to prenatal/postpartum mood and anxiety disorders, sexuality, relationships, perfectionism, disordered eating/body image, stress, coping, and life transitions. I am also qualified to assist fellow nurses, college students, and travelers with their unique concerns. Wounded healers have a special place in my "workbasket of deservables." I am trained and certified by Postpartum Support International. Expectant and new mothers who are looking for an experienced, knowledgeable therapist to help them navigate the stormy seas of depression, anxiety and changes during that time can choose from individual and/or couple therapy. I offer PMAD support groups on an ongoing basis, so, remember, you need not struggle alone or in silence with your feelings. I am pleased to offer a different model of services to my clients. In addition to my comfortable and pleasant home office, I do home and workplace visits, and have evening and weekend hours. I also know how busy life can be and will taper session times and frequency to your exact needs. I have been using the Internet to do counseling for many years. In the beginning, back in 1985, I moderated a forum on CompuServe, and most communication took place by posting on message boards, then via email and instant messaging. As technology has evolved, now (of course), I also incorporate telephone and video, as well. More positive dimensions to add to our therapy experience together. Distance is no longer an obstacle. I use an eclectic model in my practice, with an emphasis on mainly solution-focused and cognitive behavioral therapies. I also use bibliotherapy, poetry, music, and journaling in my work. Although I am NOT a nurse practitioner and do NOT PRESCRIBE MEDICATIONS, I do medication teaching, evaluation, supervision, and follow up, as necessary. I have been educated to care for you in a holistic manner - and will refer you to the appropriate health care provider when and if needed. I know how daunting it can be to seek and to find a qualified person to invest your time and trust in to guide you along the way to looking at yourself and your life in order to make changes and eventually feel better. Again, many thanks for considering me and I look forward to working with you soon.
